Water: our biggest challenge
Tanzania is water-stressed. Mining uses water. We can't change that fundamental tension — but we account for every litre.
Target: 90% by 2026
30 litres per tonne of ore
Industry average: 60–80 litres. We've halved it. No freshwater extraction from rivers — only deep boreholes and rainwater harvesting.

What we disturb, we restore
Underground block caving limits our surface footprint to 4.2 hectares — compared with 150+ for a comparable open pit.

2024 community payment
1.5% of revenue — not profit. The payment happens before we calculate shareholder returns.
Villages decide the projects
We don't choose where the money goes. The 11 surrounding villages elect a committee. In 2024 they chose: a secondary school science lab, three boreholes, and a mobile health clinic.
10% co-contribution
Every community project requires a 10% local contribution — labour or materials. It prevents dependency. It builds ownership. It was their idea, not ours.
Where we fail
Mining is dangerous. We do not pretend otherwise. What we commit to is learning from every incident.
Lost-time injuries (2024)
2Both minor fractures. Down from 5 in 2023. Both led to immediate task redesign.
Near-miss reports (2024)
147We reward near-miss reporting. A reported near-miss is a prevented injury.
One fatality (2016)
A haul truck driver died in a rollover. We changed slope design, installed roll-over protection on every vehicle. The driver's name is on the wall in our safety office.

The hard trade-offs
Cyanide
We use it. There is no viable alternative for our ore type. We destroy 99.97% before tailings leave the circuit. Published monthly.
Diesel
Haul trucks and generators burn diesel. We are trialling battery-electric loaders underground. But we're not pretending the transition is imminent — it's at least 5 years away at scale.
Expatriate specialists
40% of specialist roles are expatriates. We want that number to be zero. We have 14 Tanzanians in accelerated development programmes right now.
